Kathy Kelly and David Smith-Ferri will report back from their visit with Iraqi refugees in Amman, Jordan, including video shot recently in Iraq. Their presentation will bring the Iraqi people they’ve encountered into our midst and call us into a campaign of sustained resistance to this war. David will read from his newly released volume of poetry, Battlefield without Borders (www.battlefieldwithoutborders.org). No admission charge but donations for Iraqi refugees will be accepted and all proceeds from the sale of the book will go directly to needy Iraqi families and to a school for Iraqi refugee children.

The presentation will focus on the consequences of war.

  1. Consequences for displaced Iraqis (in Iraq and in Jordan);
  2. Consequences for Americans who suffer neglect because of our bloated military budget.
  3. Consequences for the planet when we fail to address the major environmental problems which face us, in part because we are pouring our resources (intellectual as well as financial) into our military adventures.
  4. Last, we will invite people into a sustained campaign of resistance.
Kathy herself will just be coming off a long fast in April.

We will begin the evening with a selected reading of poems from Battlefield without Borders, a newly-published book of poetry about war in Iraq. Many of the poems were written in Iraq. The book is about events in Iraq over the last eight years. Kathy wrote the Foreword to the book. We’re hoping to raise funds for Iraqi families who have been displaced by violence, both families living in Iraq and families who have fled their country. Audience members will be given the chance to buy a copy of the book (all but $2 of the sales price goes to a fund Voices has set up) and to make donations. At the book’s website (www.battlefieldwithoutborders.org), there is info about the book, selected poems, and brief “portraits” of some of the families we are assisting.
